Sorry, I'm fucking up on the mail...

So we threw this big party, which was branded as the yearly 'deadletter party' - however I really didn't have the time to get the Pirate Mail stuff together in time - I even bought a keg of pabst to give to people who wrote mail!

What the mail needs:

1) I need to formalize a database of people, sorted by

a) content they might want to be written about (show me all the envelopes about sex!)
b) location (show me all the envelopes to Berkeley!)
c) Tribe - (show me all the zoobombers!)

2) We have lots of envelopes and stencils to make more envelopes... and now, a silkscreen to churn out envelopes!

3) Printing of envelopes? I hope to have this perfected in order to mass-produce entire sets of the pirate mail, because other cities want care packages of envelopes!

4) Better sorting trays or boxes... so we could set up on the street and have everything necessary, neatly organized, for people to write mail.

5) Street setup... table, chair, carrying box.

And in terms of new technology,

6) a website, with

a) copies of mail
b) a way to enter new addressees
c) a way to receive a random addressee to write to
d) a way to connect your own node to
i) group identifications (assumption of broad informational cross-travel)
ii) people you could get mail to (direct, specific connection for travel)
iii) people you've even heard of (direct, potential for travel)
e) a way to display the growing network node

7) a scanner that can work on USB power (no plug) or an inverter and battery setup to be able to scan written mail IMMEDIATELY to no longer interrupt the mailing of mail, and still have a copy.

Pirate Mail in Berkeley... AGAIN!

Deadletter is a project year round, with a (sometimes) presence at BRC. In October of 2005, we went to Berkeley and posted signs of ourselves all over campus - and the campus slowly noticed, was mystified by, and discussed our presence there. We slowly made our presence more 'understandable', and by the end it was all about Pirate Mail Pirate Mail Pirate Mail.

This month we announced on the UCBerkeley livejournal community that we'd be coming back, and a number of people have posted their pirate mail addresses and want MAIL!

The thread can be found at: http://community.livejournal.com/ucberkeley/2762935.html

We'll be going down in the second week of January, and we need mail to these people! Now, this begs the question of, how do we _get_ the mail from you, to give out. Well, first, could you write it right away? Then, we'll need to figure out how to get it to it's location. We could use USPS mailing address in PDX, and we could take it to Berkeley and pass it around. Or, I can see if the people in Berkeley wantsto be 'point' for collecting mail for strangers and then reading it, editing it, and passing it around. Or you could pirate mail it to UCBerkeley, and it will get there... whenever it gets there!

Some of the interesting people we've been given to write to:

metavirus defined, bitch!

The metavirus is, I think, a highly infectious awareness of one's thoughts, conceptual habits, and the framework through which one generally likes to look at herself, others, the world, and the universe. It is spread communicably via interpersonal contact with the infected. The infected are easily identifyable and are best disposed of by a shaolin spade, but that is another matter entirely. The main thing is to run like hell as soon as you smell them or see the glint in their eye when you use words like 'just,' 'only,' or 'but.' Once you have had contact with a carrier, you are pretty much screwed for life at that point, and this author recommends lots of ice cream and movies. - submitted by deadletter j

Upcoming dates... including THIS FRIDAY!

Okay peeps, it's time to get started! allegedly we're tabling the 3-minute film project for PSU this fall, which means we need to be ready!

1) the deadletter laptop with footage on it of
a) Max Jack
b) Mattress gets run over by bicycles
c) Larch Mountain

It would probably be easiest if we burn these to a cd each and then had them to put into the laptop, rather than putting them on the hardrive

2) flyers? signup list? tabling?

3) we said we would make a film of the Party In The Park itself, and it would be great if we had one person filming and one person walking behind with a sign that says, "3 minute film club!"

4) Pirate Mail - time to get the table all together! We need envelopes, perhaps? I have blanks, stencils and spraypaint. Movie night tomorrow night, make envelopes?

5) We also need to decide what to do about getting rid of mail that we have - do we have enough to let it all go? Perhaps we take enough to let mail go _only_ to psu.

Would it work to make a rule that to take mail you have to write mail?

1) We need a cd copier/dvd copier at some point. This entails a computer made to plug in a LOT of dvd burner drives, and then the dvd burners themselves. Approx $1000 for the cd replicator and then probably $1000 for the dvd drives themselves

2) a DV playback deck - nearly 900$! - we need to be able to spool the dv tapes to the computers with something other than the cameras themselves.

3) more cameras! My panasonic has a broken tape cage.

So I started a big shitstorm on Portland Burners Tribe about process and how decisions are made...

Here's a response I got...

You scare me. I and my peers do not know you , K8, tuk, or any of the people you ve chosen to publicly witch burn. I was looking forward to meeting many of ya'll. Quite frankly, your tone scares me. I would never choose to spend time with someone who maliciously pits friend vs friend. Please make no effort to recruit us into your sheepish minions, and you so brazenly remark in your public posts. Have some decency and address issues politely and privately. Oh, did I mention that you scare me. Respond if you must. Youll probably just post it elsewhere(one of your infamous techniques). But I shan't respond back bc I know that conversations online are meaningless and filled with third-person machismo. I cannot believe you brought me down to your level. I know this unprovoked message will make you smile. You scare me. But I do not do it for everyone elses sake. You represent only resentment, And I am glad I dont know why. I hope you find something that makes you happy, and you can "win" at, bc I sure have not seen it online. And if I ever, ever try to ruin a well-intended gathering, please respond in kind.

If someone can help me, I think someone tried to send me a letter from Minnesota years ago. I live in California and I was wondering if anyone could help me find out whats going on. I found my name and sort-of address on a list by google-searching my own name, and was surprised to find that my old nickname "Sir Jean-Paul Elbat III" and the name of my college were included. If anyone could fill me in on this stuff it sounds like a lot of fun. My name is Amy and its nice to meet you!

Yes, last Sunday our dear SysFail was arrested, and apparently somewhere out there is GREAT footage of his head being crushed against the curb, next to PIOB. And PIOB was ALSO taken into custody (Sysfail was pulling it around, undercharged though it was), and we will be attempted to free it from captivity tomorrow.

PIOB is being released without charges. Sysfail was charged with interfering with a peace officer, resisting arrest, and obstruction of a vehicle right-of-way.

It's a place to throw events, sure, and many people will know of us because of that.

It will also be a place to have that woodshop you need for that one project, it will be a great place to have that metal shop, or a/v lab, you need once in a blue moon.

Join that tribe to hear about what's going on over there!

Tram Jack - a well done film... Date: 2/23/07

In the month of February, the tram will be free on fridays, 6pm to 10pm.

Goal: To get on the tram with

a) mini bicycles
b) cameras
c) party in a box.

Tram Jack!

We're talking five cameras needed for good shots.

Camera 1 - stays behind as the tram goes away (for door closing). Then rides to bottom of the tram jack run to catch the final arrival.
Camera 2 - in the tram for the party
Camera 3 and 4 - two shots of the tram, music coming out, as it passes overhead
Camera 5 - waiting at the top. catches the arrival and disembarkment of the crowd.

Then, cameras 2 and 5 ride down the hill. Perhaps camera 2 can immediately go down and get in position, and camera 5 covers disembarkment to departure down the hill.

Completed piece become an eight minute 'filmed by bike'.

Otherwise the little baby jesus will cry and we don't want that. Lets put aside all the little differences, because they really are nothing when compared with the heavy heavy stuff going on in the world. We need to create a space like the Watershed and ToolShed so we can cross pollenate and grow into big sunflowers to feed all the hungry killer bees.

Seriously, lets just make it happen. I wish I had more money to put into the project but I recently put majority of my funds in another project. What I am bringing is alot of positive vibrations, tech. knowledge and builder of many things. Seriously, I have 3 solar water panels and plans for building 12V 5amp windmills out of treadmill motors. No joke, world domination 2007 is at our fingertips. Let's make it happen folks.

Introducing: Watershed

After several false starts, delays, and other artifacts of the process, we seem to be crossing the threshold on actually leasing a large building for industrial arts production in Portland, OR. The landlord has approved our proposal and is drawing up a lease. Upon signature of that lease, expect to be invited to a <b>Aphelion, a FREE GALA AFFAIR on March 3rd, 2007</b>, in Portland.

<b>Watershed</b>

Watershed has as its primary goal the sustainable maintenance of a production facility for artists, contractors and craftsmen. Watershed is committed to social engineering through the provision of physical infrastructure and support services.

Watershed has found a home (we hope!) at 5040 SE Milwaukie, along the river above Oaks Bottom park. The 17 turns left just north ofn Holgate, the 70 comes right in front. Cars can drive down MLK to the Milwaukie ramp and find us directly in front of them as they turn south to the Goodwill Bins. Reed, PSU, and PCC students can work on fabrication - PCC uses Franklin High School's shop for its classes!

Watershed hosts three entities - Tool Shed, and Burn Shed, oregon non-profits, and tenants. Tenants are metal, wood or other industrial usages looking for high-quality, low-rent fabrication space. 110 and 220, street-level access, good light, and space to work outdoors will bring industrial tenants to help pay the rent. As these tenants cycle out, they can be slowly replaced with community projects, spawned from Tool Shed. Tool Shed is the corporate shell for a series of member-operated shops. Burn Shed is the rubric under which the building interfaces with temporary, or itinerant, art projects.

Watershed is a building, a community center, a tool library, a public service agency, and an industrial arts factory... as well as a lot of fun.

<b>Tool Shed - an Oregon non-profit.</b>

Tool Shed is a non-profit dedicated to spawning single-serving corporations to house projects by teams of five or more people. This corporation performs management services for the following internal sections:
<ul>
<li> Tool Shed F-1
<li> Tool Shed A-3
<li> Tool Shed B
</ul>

<b>Tool Shed F-1</b>

If the project is industrial, physical production in nature, it is classified as "F-1 occupancy". This includes member shops and projects in:
<ul>
<li> metal shop, a shared welder
<li> wood shop, shared saws, planers, etc
<li> potter, a shared kiln, wheels
<li> audio/video, a shared editing studio
<li> photography, a shared darkroom
</ul>

Tool Shed is committed to helping the workers own the means of production. This means that each project is working to own the central infrastructure, so that we can then seed other projects with tools/equipment/technology.

<b>Tool Shed B</b>

B-occupancy refers to office uses. In the office component of the building, Tool Shed B barters office space for services to members, including
<ul>
<li> legal counsel
<li> CPA services
<li> meeting and desk space for members and projects
<li> sustainability and ecological consulting
<li> web/network consulting
</ul>

This brain trust helps us begin the life of each project.

<b>Tool Shed A-3</b>

A-3 is a workshop, rehearsal, and venue space, operating as a LLC. This space will be able to legally host OLCC permitted parties, take tickets at the door, operate as a banquet hall or a club. The use of the space for fundraising events is limited to members - members are encouraged to use the space to host free and per-fee workshops, with some caveats about how the public is allowed onto the premises.

For open-to-the-public, door-charge events, members of Tool Shed projects are not only admitted, they are crew. It is expected that a certain minimum number of crew need to have signed up for an event for it to be enacted. The number of these events is expected to be limited to probably two per month, with estimated max occupancy of 470 people.

<b>Burn Shed, an Oregon non-profit</b>

For one-day, one-week, one-month and ongoing intermittent relationships with groups, projects and individuals, Burn Shed negotiates barter, value-storage and value-exchange for groups. Need a place to work on your project for a month outside? The metal shop needs new racks! Burn Shed works with you to find out what you can offer, and how that can match up with the needs of pods within the community and with professional service individuals within and without the Watershed building.

Burn Shed also carries a mandate to assist in the implementation of any grant-funded projects within the Watershed umbrella by the provision of free labor, videography and services.

Dead Letter 2.0 - Pirate Mail

With DL2.0, Pirate Mail obviously has to be done for real. Fortunately for us, Lapis had just finished entering all of the mail recipients and transcribing the mail itself into a database when the briefcase of mail, the dead letter truck, and the media bin were all disappeared.

Related Projects:

{{Great Seattle Hijack of '07}}
{{Portland Trading Cards}}
{{Borg Communication}}
{{Tool Shed}}

To really kick start mail, we're going to need:

1) Physical Infrastructure
2) Content
3) Mail Preps
4) Distributions
5) Video

1) Physical Infrastructure

Refers first to envelopes. Unfortunately, all the envelopes that Britte did were in the truck. So it's time for new envelopes. This means stencils - and I'll speak to Edie about getting new ones made on the laser cutter at the guitar shop.
Second, we need to get a fair amount of printable mailing labels and do a mail merge, to get entire 'sets' of pirate mail.

I'm going to suggest large-size envelopes, more expensive perhaps, though it enables us to include a zine or cd, and for people to be able to toss things in and record on the back who handled it.

2) Content
We need to focus on a certain amount of print and video content, and work on having a truly excellent collection ('orderable' online means you tell us to pirate mail _x_ into the world, and we go give those away, addressed to you). And we'll probably need to start with a new Dead Letter Movie 2.0

3) Mail Prep
We need to have a few mail prep parties where we sit down and put together mail for every single person a) on the list, and b) that we put on the list so that they can become part of our web.

4) Mail Distributions
Next, we'll finally arrive into distribution phases, where we've got lots and lots of mail to hand out while we do something else, such as puppets or party-on-the-max.

5) Video
First, we'll need a terriffic new Dead Letter Movie, using perhaps puppets and a toy Dead Letter Truck (we'll need to order a few if we can find them online). Second, we'll need the ongoing story of pieces of mail, regularly recorded and delivered to H.Q., and third we'll need a regular influx of 3-minute films
Dead Letter 2.0 - Dead Letter Truck 2.0

Options for the DLT 2.0 take on some slightly different tones now that we no longer have to worry about the old wings fitting on. We do have to spend a greater amount of time, welding and money to get wings and tail on DLT 2.0. Which is sort of hilarious, if you think about it.

The current plan is to purchase a Diesel Step Van, probably around March. This is going to need some MASSIVE work to get it ready for BM '07, Green Man.

So think about that.

The teams will be:

1) Painting the outside and inside.
2) Preparing the engine for Veggie Oil
3) Wings, Tail, Rack welding
4) Lights and other extras?

I'm thinking I'll go just after xmas day to where they sell the rope lights and try to get about $100 worth of rope lights, for the new DLT upon it's completion.

Design to mostly stay the same, though we need a version that doesn't require us to pull the pins all the time to fold up the wings. Possibly wings hanging on chains, and chains to the bottom as well to keep them _down_ - held up and down would look cool!
Dead Letter 2.0 - 3 Minute Films

So we've got this cast of characters {{People}}, both the hidden and visible ones. And everybody is supposed to know us for or by the passage of informaiton about what we've been doing and seeing, via pirate mail. So now we need to clearly encapsulate what it is that Dead Letter _does_.

A general overview of our behavior is that we go out and do _stuff_, and while doing it we put a fair amount of effort into capturing it on film. This means having both intentional and archival camera footage of a good deal of our experiences. We are especially interested in:

* Footage of notable characters in the tribe we are visiting
* Footage that show key relationships in the tribe
* Footage of the group in process
* Footage of the group doing the thing it was trying to do (the performance)
* Footage of any unethical behavior, anywhere their underwear is hanging out.

So we've shown up, participated, assisted - and _paid our way_ - it's important that we pay our way until people insist to us that we do not pay. And we captured the footage of Event X.

We go bck to the Shed, and we edit our footage dwn to something reasonable - a _3-minute film_ . If necessary, multiple 3-minute films can be created - one that is 'the footage of the event', nicely cut for their archival purposes, and one that incorporates their own story.

We pirate mail some fixed number of copies. Eventually, we will set a number on this behavior to allow people to support them by paying fo r many copies to go out. Our labor, as always, is free.
Dead Letter 2.0: The People

Well, we've passed through The Singularity, and now we are forced to "Do It Better" or stop altogether.

I'm going to work on overviews of the project, then the history/stories of Dead Letter (for future puppet shows, etc). The Loss Of The Footage can be mixed with what footage _will_ re-emerge and re-enacted better with puppets. Theory has lowest priority, though there certainly is plenty of theory illustrable from Dead Letter stories.

Background: Theoretically, every person in portland is the center of their own information hub. In practicality, though, each person is easiest remembered as part of some larger group. Even the 'I-don't-belong-to-a-group' people are themselves the widest-spread net. Many different individuals, such as Lapis (Sprockettes), Gabe Tiller (ZooBomb) and various dead letter have discussed a Portland-wide trading card game.

Individuals on cards are stalked and photographed without their knowledge - {{Street Ninja Project}}. A combination of infiltrating communities to learn who their key players are and practicing covert ninja operations are used to collect profiles.

Cards are published of a particular group and then pirate mailed back to the group, individually and as sets.

Related Projects:
{{Street Ninja Project}}
{{Great Seattle/Portland Hijack of '07}}
{{Party In A Box}}
{{Dead Letter}}
{{Borg Communication}}
{{Metavirus}}

Summary:

To participate in these projects, it is essential that Dead Letter model by having a very clear set of Trading Card Profiles. Declaration is voluntary, and not a requisite of participation in deadletter, by anymeans.

-- Anyone who declares themselves deadletter IS deadletter; Embrace All Information Flow
-- Plenty of people who are not declared are ALSO deadletter; Any Participation Is Some Participation
-- To Even Know Us Is To Be Of Us

A Trading Card Profile for Dead Letter:

We can't really know what kind of information is going to be included on the cards - it's unlikely, for example, that each card with have the same categories. So put down information that is going to represent your quirkiest side, the side that is most from the norm.

Also, there's a component of the Great Seattle Hijack of '07 that requires each person to have a blackmail file, so you may want to begin dreaming one up now.

Example (editable later, as well):

deadletter b

Super Powers: Synthesis, Meta, and Disproportionate Response
Super Hero Name: Mr. Meta vs. MetaMan (yes, that's the whole name)
Secret Weakness: Peanut Butter
Member of: ZooBomb, Clowns, Sprockettes, ChickenHed, The New Orange, Deadletter, Metavirus, Borg Communication, ...
Political Parties: Nutbutter, The Bullshit Party, Megalomaniacs for America
Conduit To: (too many)

Putting it all together:

Dead Letter is likely to consist of 1-3 representatives of each different named tribe of the GSH'07. There are plenty of people who are big in their own tribe and ALSO deadletter. So the same person may have several different cards!

Feel free to place people into this list who are Dead Letter - if you say they are dead letter, they are! This goes especially for people who have been nominated as 'well connected nodes' in distant cities - they don't have to know that we've put them on a trading card till they get pirate mailed one.
The Renewal of the Level-3 Hack...

When I first began going nutso with the Metavirus, I hypothesized that any community (and an online one especially so, because of the quiet between nodes - little incidental background noise) would react according to a specific pattern.

The pattern was instantiated beyond my hopes, drawing certain embedded behaviors (such as the embedded guru role of the SuperBrodie) out into the explicit awareness of the group.

Additionally, the system sent pseudopods in the form of Dave Hall and Zach Moser out to 'check me out' during the 'seek out more information' phase. And the whole 'shutdown' getting hacked by a third-party conduit - Dave's crush on Edie reopened the entire system!

Anyhoo, Zach has moved to Portland, and gotten off the list. I tried sending the following letter to the list, though the SuperBrodie is still worried about me! Allegedly, he tried having some contacts in the Seattle Public Schools look into whether I was 'really' a teacher there. When they didn't turn me up (??), he decided I must be a pathological liar.

Here's the recent letter. Zach and I thought it would be fun to have a thread here to discuss developments in that community. If you are thinking about joining the Level-3 list, to watch things unfold, we'll give you pointers on what they are about, what they want.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________
Wednesday, Zach arrived on the plane. I picked him up at the airport.

Thursday, Zach drove with me to pick up Ari in Salem, and then hung out with Ari and Georgia while I went to class (Agent-Based Simulation)

Friday, Zach went to the Library with Ari and Tori, and then walked up and down Hawthorne. In the evening, he hung around the house so I could go out with a baby-mama I know.

Saturday, Ari woke up Zach by jumping on him. He's pretty good with kids, since he's so cheerful all the time. It was fun listening to them laugh.

Sunday, Zach finally went out on the town... here's the story:

Zach was drinking at a titty bar, and he asked Chris, the bouncer, to call him a cab. I was up Zoo Bombing (big hills, very small bikes - http://www.zoobomb.net), when he was down in the city. He told the cabbie to let him stop at a cash machine. Out of the darkness comes a woman with no clothes, only a jacket!

Zach offered to get her a ride home, and she took him up on the offer. He stopped by the Dead Letter Truck (http://deadletter.tribe.net) to get her some clothes... and suddenly she was shouting about him attacking her!

She ran off into the darkness, and from nowhere pulled pants as she ran!

And then he realized that his cash card was gone. What a scam!

Monday, he walked around the NorthEast, went to the library, etc.

Tuesday (today), we went out to breakfast, and then drove over to Free Geek (http://www.freegeek.org), a linux recycling community. Then, over to Dead Letter/Zoo Bomb Tori's house, where we made pirate mail for Nh@ (Nhatt) in London, traveling there with Dead Letter Y

Then, we went down to Powell's books, where we listened to a poet read named Sandra Stone. She's an older woman who needs helping organizing all of her lifes projects, from poetry and visual arts, to helping move her out of her house. Georgia, Tori, Zach and I are going next week to try to help her move out of her house with the Dead Letter Truck.

Dead Letter Y (Jonathon Lehmann) says he'll be logging onto Level-3 while he's on his trip to London/Spain... a good chance for Level-3 peeps to send pirate mail to each other!

My current statement of my purpose: To facilitate the transmission of information between elements of a system. Such as helping DLY carry pirate mail from different Level-3'ers to each other.

Richard Batsford, you still on the list?

Dave, Edie says, "BARGE BLOG"

Mickey - Caterpillar Feet! Hi, Eva. Glee, Georgia is no longer in Ann Arbor. Too bad you didn't get to meet while she was there! 'specially since she got a degree in library science!

;-b

Edie, want to post a quick note? I know you've been on here the whole time, too...

There's a $900 Chevy 400 V8 (larger than ours... more power!) that we could get. It looks pretty ideal.

http://salem.craigslist.org/car/223985493.html

And then we'd have a nice truck to either a) convert to diesel or b) run it as it is. There's a lot to be said. I wonder how the brakes are? Perhaps I'll go down Tuesday (Halloween) and take it into a brake shop to have them tell me how it is doing.

The trauma and drama so far... (DLT 2.0)

Wednesday, 10-18,
06:35 pm -

Is this deadletter, or what?
So the guy selling the truck called to say he had had some car trouble, and was leaving a little late. Okay, so he'll be here around 7pm.

Now he calls, approximately 6pm, saying that he's blown a head-gasket, and is stuck in Redding.

So he could MAYBE get here in the morning. Fuck fuck fuckity fuck! I have to get back, Ari is being dropped off in Portland around 4-5pm tomorrow. This means I HAVE to leave here approximately 7 in the morning - which I can't afford to be fucking around with! I'd much rather be leaving in the middle of the night.

This guy, Rich, is stranded in Redding. I believe he is renting a car and driving down here. ASAP! ARGH!

Fuck. This is hardcore Dead Letter!

Dead Letter Truck 2.0

Overview: Dead Letter Truck 1.0 needs all new brakes.

Cost: $1600

Cost of a new truck, diesel: $1350

Current Location: In Oakland purchasing said truck. Back tonight. Brought camera, puppet, making movie of the entire thing.

Dead Letter Truck 2.0 - SVO CONVERSION - The three minute trailer/start of film.

The beginning of the movie - some small and delaying tragedy suddenly kicks the main characters into a flurry of activity. They've got to get to a computer!

Characters in the car - calling Handsome Dave. "Can I borrow your camera again?" "Dude, you've still got my camera."

Main characters are at location X, trying to get the recording devices setup. Fuck! Dave's camera is almost out of battery. Okay, save it for 'the moment'. Whoops, it's out of space.

How about the broken one? Can we jack it into the computer directly and dv straight to harddrive? ALMOST! NO!"

People driving over. People running to other locations. Come running in with a VHS camera, old style.

Cut to tape everywhere. Ebay auction ending in several minutes. Ride to Oakland discussed. Car drivers not going to be there in time... stop lights...

Weariness, dejection, worry... this is a bad start to the 'myth', the making of the movie about how 'it all went down'.

Fuck. Go ahead and bid. How depressing. Fuck. it's got to be done. Depressed group.

end of 3 minute opener for the movie!

Continuation.

possible insert #1: outbidGoes ahead and bids. OUTBID, horribly, last few seconds. Everyone slightly relieved, will do it next time WITH proper camera setup.

All depressed, leave the place.

Email the next day, "Second Chance Offer!" - Still no camera. Great distress in private moment... goes ahead and clicks, EVERYTHING BACK ON!

possible insert #2: abusive puppet. Puppet cursing everyone for how fucked up it all is. Side comment. "When this is all over, I'm gonna fucking MURDER that goddamn puppet." Possible attempts on puppets life? Stabbed through the hand at the end, guy comes out from behind sofa and has to go to hospital, everyone like, "Whoah! Did you know John was the puppet?"

Camera now together, off to get the truck. Road Trip moments? Metavirus?

Truck returned. All meetings, work, spreadsheets, trips to store... EVERYTHING is captured over the next 6 months.

What kind of work?

1) Moving the wings, tail, roofrack over, repainting inside, cutting windows...

2) Straight Veggie Oil Conversion - everything to do with the running of the engine.

3) Infrastructure Hacks on other groups... showing up to assist in everyone else's parties.

4) Valentine's Day event - ALL the how-to about how the party was thrown, bad party = good story!

5) 3 minute films of other groups.

Here we go! time for a big story!

Gas in the truck will probably be around $10 (roundtrip), and the party is only $20 - which is seriously cheap for this party!

Playaba (African playa tribe) appreciates Dead Letter so much because:
Dead Letter is the greatest Art Car ever to roll across the playa
We love Dead Letter B and our gorgeous hostess
We love the cushy roof deck and the sexy wings
We love that you hung out with us all Thursday night
We love how much you think about stuff
We love how sarcastic you are
We love that you drove so fast that we got pulled over and that you stalled in the middle of the street and dealt with our asshole friend
We love that you bring darkness and we bring light and together we are unstoppable
We love you!!!!

Information Profile for 2006:

Here's a rundown on information hits on playa this year. While about a third of the info hits I had hoped to have, it is still a pretty good list.

1) Riders - while we took two separte attributions of negative intent from our riders - one from Chadwick, and one from Mario, in general our riders were solidly infected by the end.

Evidence: "nine" as a call and response, phrases from the metavirus, Zoo Bombing, other information branding moments

2) Gate Crew -

Tori hid, and then jumped out and mocked Gate Crew for not finding her. They were going to put us in park for an hour. We were still in a good mood about that, so they let us go because of our indomitable spirit. Later in the week, a gate crew guy screamed at us for being stalled in an intersection. Called us Broke-Down Ass Shit. Since we view them as an arbitrary and vindictive authority, we voluntarily took an attribution of negative intent in both of these cases.

3) Cafe

D-reg missed his 7:00 shift, which tilted the system _away_ from us to start. He worked a 3:00 shift, and I specifically mentioned to Tisha2 that he was there and working to make up the earlier shift, and she appreciated that. Ends up being a flat branding through the balancing of positive and negative.

4) Arctica -

We took a solid positive branding on the Monday Arcitca shift. We rocked the place, emphasized our collective identity. We did NOT have group branding at that time. Also, Xanadu/Arctica came out on the truck for the third year in a row. Solid!

5) Disorient -

We did NOT show up as promised on Sunday - which goes to exemplify the way that promising and failing is MUCH worse than not promising and showing up as a surprise. We came in Wednesday morning, and all but one rickshaw was together. We assembled that one, and decorated. More or less a neutral hit - we could expect them to remember us, and also to be gun-shy of making plans that involve depending on us.

This is also a blowback-negative hit on K8, since she swore to them that we would do what we said we would do. ;(

6) Samba do Sol -

While I missed my Wednesday evening safety shift during the rehearsal, overall we took a net positive profile from SdS. We took out the drummers that night, transported people home after the Friday night procession, hauled the stuff out to burn night, and transported Jake, Carrie and Julie back to Eugene.

7) Artery Tour, Thursday -

We took a solid positive from both Eva of the Artery and the collective that rode the DLT for the artery tour. We took a double-positive from the people who got involved in adjusting the fuel/air mix. (involvement or assistance is a much more effective infection).

8) Videogasm -

Though more-or-less unused, I did drop off Dead Letter Laptop at Videogasm, where it stayed for three days. Also did a memory hit on the Dead Letter Movie from 2004.

9) Playaba/African Drumming -

We showed up late, and yet because of the slow decision making process involved, our tardiness was swallowed in their tardiness. Took a slightly neutral hit (carrie's posts in this tribe notwithstanding) in order to be able to brace them on their desire to remake burning man into something they were more comfortable with - wanting to move thunderdome off the esplanade, wanting everyone to be more like some mythical 'family', for example...

10)Exposure Hits, weeklong -

Because the symbols on the side of the DLT involve words, people had a tendency to zazz to meaning and geek out verbally ("Dead Letter") as they walked by. Estimate: Several hundred

11) Repetiion hits, weeklong -

Because our exposure is several years old now, we also got a fair number of repetition hits, where people were reminded of who we are.

The major gaps in our planned information profile:

1) Mail - total lack of mail
2) No Pirate Mail of Videos... even though the videos were done, we didn't get any out.
3) No Smoke Bomb - Performance Safety was going to give us smoke bombs, didn't get around to it with all the sleeping.
4) No creation of video pieces

While these would have significantly increased the volume of our information profile, it is also possible that we would have gotten blowback from our negative information profile moments - it may be that this is as large or as good as our profile could be this year.

As it stands today, we have the following departure/loading plans.

1) Pre-loading, 8-16

The last wednesday work party (one week from tomorrow) is scheduled to be for bulk cooking. At the same time, we hope to go through everyone's gear checklists again. If you can bring your things to my house to begin assembling the load, that is helpful too.

2) Theoretical Loading, 8/19 or 8/20

We might take the DLT out to Mountain Bomb with the Zoo Bombers on the 19th, to give it a test run (it's going to need a certain amount of driving to get the new engine settled in). So the 20th would be 'load day'.

Everything you can possibly have together comes to 11th and skidmore (or another location TBA if Dave is setting up his yurt), and we load it into the truck.

3) Three days of whatever (I'm done with summer school teaching at that time), and then the truck needs to be _mostly_DONE_ - real done, by Thursday the 24th.

Because 8/24, I'm driving to Seattle with Ari to drop him off with Grandpa.

4) Friday 8/25 - I will be picking up Mattress, Kirsten and Greg in Seattle - Greg is coming down from Victoria, not yet clear how. We'll leave around mid-day, hopefully, and drive into PDX in the afternoon.

Loading will involve tossing their gear onto the truck - Mattress and Greg are 'backpack and person' loads, Kirsten is likely to be a fair amount of stuff, I'll also have additional stuff from the storage unit.

5) Friday evening - we'll want to wait for traffic to die down, and I imagine us having time for some group hanging out - either a quick ZB! or visit with Dead Letter crew who are not going this year - they'll be playing at the 9th Ave Public House if we want to stop for a beer with the loaded truck and then get out of town.

6) Drive to Eugene, where we'll pick up three futons and three water containers from Michael White of Samba do Sol. We may also be picking up drums for Samba do Sol.

7) South on I-5, turn up 58 towards the mountains. 1.5 hour of driving brings us to McCredie Hot Springs - these are the most accessible hot springs on our route, and are also supposed to be off limits at night. The state patrol have harrassed Dead Letter's J and Z (from Eugene) there before for after-hours. Predicting that this will be about midnight or later, I'm suggesting we sleep till dawn, get up for an early dip, and get on the road about 8-10am.

8) It's about 200 miles to Alturas, the last town in CA. This will take till around 2pm, _including_ the shopping stops that invariably come up (Oh wait! I have to go buy my tent!)

9) Nevada Bomb is from the top of the pass after Alturas, down TWO THOUSAND FEET to Cedarville. In Cedarville, we need to pick up all our water. Thus we avoid driving it over one of the two passes.

10) It's another hour to the next (last) pass - one more bomb? 1500' is still DOUBLE Big Burnside in height drop.

11) Another hour or so and we're in Gerlach. Expect around dinner time, including all final operations.

12) Gas up in Gerlach

13) Go to gate, work out early arrival tix, tickets, etc.

14) Midnight! Finally get home.

Camp Overview...

This email to the yahoogroups list (deadletter@yahoogroups.com) came back with very few items needing tweaking, so we can more-or-less consider it to be our plan at this time. I will attempt to upload a camp sketch to the tribe images.

Please send this on to anyone who is not yet on this list who is camping
with/near us...

In this email:
Preamble - who is camping with us?
1) Location/How to find us when you get there
2) Infrastructure
3) Camp Food/Water (intentional lack thereof)
4) What's Your Job?
5) Who do I talk to about...
6) Radios!

Preamble - In the last two weeks, a number of people have contacted me or mentioned that they'd like to camp with us. Little do they know! So here's the list of who that might be - these are people who may or may not snuggle their tents right next to ours (so we can stretch everybody's silver tarps over everything), and who can be expected to use the evaporator, stove, and trash.

DLY and I thought that if we ask them to bring Liquor and Mixers (and other party favors), we would actually get a lot more than if we asked for a 'camp fee', so we are going with that approach - let's us gift them the infrastructure, and if they think our stuff not that great, well it was free, neh?

Of the original six, Sysfail is most likely to end up unable to come :(

1) DLY
2) DLE
3) Lapis
4) Sysfail
5) Tori
6) DLB

Many of you know
7) Lady Chinche (Janene Kaza),
8) Orion and
9) her roommate Jessica

(they hosted the underwear party a month ago). Theoretically, they will show up
and camp with/near us as well! Woot!

10) Dan Lemley is going to caravan with us on the way down, with (I think)
11) Ryan Walters
12) (maybe one more)

and we will be met by three coming out of L.A., associated with them:
13) Loren Kozak
14) Some Texan (Rachel Shoemaker)
15) (maybe one more)

And last, I received an email from
16) Scottica (http://people.tribe.net/1711e3d4-7467-4926-ad8f-573169ea83dd)
17) (plus one).
18) (plus one)

The evaporator will actual be _more_ worth while with more people using it. The kitchen will need extra propane, maybe one more stove, and another dishrack (we've got that), and probably a clean dishes bin and a dirty dishes bin. The shade structure itself won't _really_ hold everyone hanging out at once, however it can be added to pretty darn easily - I heard dan Lemley has another parachute.

WE DO NEED MORE SILVER TARPS - if every triad of people brings a LARGE silver-sided tarp, we'll be able to hunker everyone down into it.

1) Location - we're doing a 'first-people-in-the-door' landgrab at 7:00 and Brave (or as close as we can come to that). If you get to the playa separate from us, get on Radio Channel 4-05 and call for us, Trogs, Nine or Samba do Sol - there WILL be someone monitoring that channel for calls of that nature. If you are radio-less, go to AREA 2257 VILLAGE (7:00 and Eager) and ask for Samba do Sol - they WILL know where we are. We will also register with Center Camp.

2) Infrastructure - another reason we have decided not to request a camp fee is that we have fairly simple infrastructure. Complete compared to noobs, nothing compared to a big camp.

It is:

a) Shade Structure - 6 bamboo poles with lines to the ground (watch out for trip lines!), a green rectangular parachute over. L.A. peeps are bringing fabrics to hang.

b) Kitchen - 1 white table, a propane stove (nice double burner, cleaned with a grinder since last year), a dish-rack, no sink.

c) evaporator - the evaporator will actually work _better_ if more water/people are using it. So more in camp is a plus!

d) carties - we built terrific bike carts for Samba do Sol, a couple of blocks away. We may build ourselves one, AND we can always pop over to SdS to get one.

e) Trash - this will consist of a dessication station and four cardboard boxes stapled to the playa with rebar, with trash bags inside. Food/compost will be dessicated and burned (NO FOOD IN OTHER TRASH).
Cans to recycling camp
Bottles will go home with us
Paper/Burnables
Plastics

and of course

f) The Dead Letter Truck! Our mutant vehicle devoted to the misdelivery of mail (again, we're more about wankers misdelivering people and stuff than _ever_ trying to get mail to a particular spot. We MISdeliver the mail).

3) NO CAMP FOOD/WATER

I've been emphasizing (for my own personal comfort) that each person/group handles its own food. If someone wants to gift a meal to the entire camp, they a) could bring it on TOP of the food they were bringing for themselves, b) not to promise/plan a particular day or time - do it if/when it feels right! and c) not expect anyone who eats it to clean up the dishes. (not that you can't ask - remember to ask!)

This is because we have a fair number of people who are new to the playa experience, and I saw the horrible specter of fucked-up camp meals and planning rising up in front of us.

The truck has a fair amount of _dates_ already planned on playa, two-three hour obligations every day. Other than that, anyone with a drivers license is invited to be checked out as a driver (do we think you can avoid alcohol while driving, do we think you can avoid running people over, who's your safety bitch, and most important, do we think the truck will be back when it needs to be back!)

4) What's your job?

If you are joining us now, we have the perfect job for you! We're going to ask each and every one of you to perform this simple task every time you step out of camp.

KEEP THE TRASH SEPARATED!

When you pass through camp, glance into the bins. Are all the cans ONLY cans? We already have a volunteer who will regularly get those off to recycling camp. Are there any burnables in the trash? Are there any recyclables or burnables in the plastics? And most importantly, is there any FOOD in the garbage? A plastic glove will be there, and you are welcome to place the offending food on the bed of whomever put it in the wrong place (if you know... be careful!).

Other than that, our camp shouldn't _need_ any work, shouldn't need any chores. Setup is already handled by the peeps! There will be a need for volunteers to help us set up the Dead Letter Truck for inspection by the DMV - cleaning it out after the trip down (all the way to zero moop) is some work, setting up the sails, lights... that's a pretty fun task.

The 'original six' are handling the following setups and maintenance - you can always help them on an impromptu basis:
Dead Letter E - Evaporator
Dead Letter Y - Kitchen
Zoo Bomb! Tori - Trash setup/lead - she's super nice, and will be the one who
helps you get in the habit of checking trash
Zoo Bomb! Sysfail - Bicycle Maintenance
Dead Letter b - Truck, Carties, bicycles
Zoo Bomb!/Sprockettes Lapis - Camp Admin

#5) Who do I talk to?

Right now, I would encourage you to email everyone at deadletter@yahoogroups.com - if you are wondering, someone else is probably wondering too!

If you'd like to talk about Deadletter finding you a bicycle, or bringing your bicycle (and in some cases, water), send an email to myself, Dead Letter b, at deadletter@speakeasy.net

If you'd like to organize collective purchasing, send an email to the whole list, and then take it off list - feel free to report back on what y'all figured out.

When we get to playa, we'll ask you to talk to our awesome camp admin - Lapis - She'll be the relay point for info, if there happens to be any that needs relaying. If you wanted to leave a message for someone, you might try leaving a note on Lapis' board to pass it on.

And 6) A final word about RADIOS!

I love radios. I want everyone to have a decent radio. We're talking a minimum of a 7-mile radio, FRS or GMRS, with both the regular channels and the 'privacy frequency'.

Our friends, the Samba do Sol, are always on 4-05, for example. Dead Letter (might) be on 8-28, or something else if not everyone has the entire gamut of radio options.

A pair of decent cobras was $60 at Big 5 recently. At Walmart, a _fairly_ decent pair was going for $25, an actually decent pair at $40. Try to fit it in! If you'd like me to try to pick you up one, send me a note.

See you on the playa!

Greetings,
Q told me about your crew and thought you might be interested in hosting an African drum and dance troupe for a Th night performance tour of the playa. We are seeking an art vehicle that can accomadate 10-15 people plus drums. Let me know if you are our missing link.
Peace,

I need a ticket

So as some of you might know I had to take a emergency trip to Florida to take care of my Dad after an operation. THis ended up costing me money because I'm not working right now other than odd jobs. So I need to buy a ticket ASAP for as cheap as possible.

Why do you want to sell me a ticket cheap. Well I'm a anarchist who spent his $150 on literature distro materials for South Florida instead of Burning Man ticket when I should have, since this place is void of any solid activist groups from what I have encountered. They are here but just not really solid, so I'm trying to skill share with everybody I meet down here while taking care of my Dad. I'm hoping to make the $150 back through selling the books to pay for everything, and give away for free all the zines and stickers.

Peace, Love, and Anarchy

Geo from Disorient is sending 6 rickshaws (http://seedwiki.com/wiki/Disorient/rickshaw.html) to the Bay Area from China. Should arrive on Aug 20th.

Is there anyone who can help us assemble them?

This should be someone with bike experience. They are large - we'll need space to assemble. But the real issue is putting them together. they come without instructions, all parts in one box... need someone who really knows their bikes. Regarding size assembled of rickshaw: 38x32x72 inches.

in exchange for your time, you will be showered in buckets of pornj freek love.

The Who's Going Topic...

I am going.

Additionally, Evan has expressed an interest in riding with us. I think he has a ticket (?)
Christophe has a ticket (Zoo Bomb!)

We are getting low-income ticket applications to the following people THIS WEEK, with the expectation that they will probably ride to BM with us:

Loren (Sprockettes)
Tattoo Wes (Zoo Bomb!)
Tori (Zoo Bomb!)
Sysfail (Brian, Zoo Bomb!)
Dogeye (Jake, Zoo Bomb!)
Alyson (??)

That still leaves us room for about 6 more - it's a really big truck! The more we take, the less we stress. Transporting with us is NOT the same as camping with us - if a person wants to do that too, there's going to be an expectation that one 'participate materially' in the camp. Since this is a lot of first timers, expect to FIND YOUR OWN PLACE TO CAMP, HANDLE YOUR OWN FOOD, AND CLEAN UP YOUR OWN GOD-DAMN TRASH!

If you're thinking about camping _with_ Dead Letter, there's these other things to consider:

1) Trash - if it isn't handled right (properly separated, packaging thrown away before the playa, recyclables burnt), it really becomes a pain in the fucking ass

2) Food - Sure, bulk food is nice - and so is being cooked for - but there never was a Noobie yet who could show up for their cooking shift.

3) Kitchen - Would we want a sink? What about an evaporator setup? What about a shower setup?

4) Shade Structure - Jake's got a shade structure - someone other than me will have to practice putting it up and taking it down, BEFORE WE GO.

5) Theme Camp App - Do we want to put in for a theme camp? Mostly our theme camp can be the parking spot for a giant mutant vehicle.

Think about these things. See you tomorrow night! (Wednesday, June 14, 6-11 at 11th and NE Skidmore).

so what types of music are awesome and what's really annoying? we should set up a soundtrack before cramming the truck and leaving portland.

i've had people yell at me before for playing too much hiphop and others won't listen to rock if they can help it.

maybe make a bunch of mix cds for different mindsets? i dunno.

I just checked http://eplaya.burningman.com - and there's a number of REALLY GOOD rides right now.

Some are offering GIFTS of a ride, there's a big RV leaving from Salem for only $50 (again, they own the RV and are gifting the ride, pretty much). Other people are a LOT cheaper than us - and probably faster, too!

Get Off The Bus!

Dead Letter Truck MURDERED!

Tonight, we seized the engine.

We SEIZED the ENGINE! MWAHAHAHA!

Now, fortunately for everybody involved, we have connections. Good connections - and we'll be getting a new chev 350 V8, this time the _appropriate_ sized V8, and a pretty darn good deal on it, too. I contemplated the switch to biodiesel, and I'll definitely talk to the guys about switching over to a diesel as well. If we switch to a new V8, we'll switch to biodiesel in TWO years, rather than one.

The truck will be down at the shop till late July, and will come back

a) with no leaking power steering pump,
b) with no leaking timing belt cover (that's how we got in this mess in the first place)
c) with proper timing, good compression, good everything, really.

The only thing this means is that I need to raise the deposit amount on people's spots - instead of asking $40 to hold your spot, I will ask for half, $100.

Keep in mind that most of the other rides to the playa are _double_ what we charge - $400 - so I know that if anyone wants to give up their spot, there are a LOT more people who will take it.

Sorry for any inconvenience, and yes, I'd be happy to work with you over the summer to get your ride-fee in. If you don't have your money when we get on the road, we'll buy your ticket from you and wish you a good week off.

Also, remember your puppet. A hand puppet, a sock puppet, a stuffed animal on a stick. BRING YOUR PUPPET!.

And now for the story:

I rushed out of my house with Christophe and Ari, loaded up with things for the Zoo Bomb picnic. It was 6:45, and we were supposed to be at the Pile with the Dead Letter Truck at 7:00.

We had:

Fire Gear (staves, buckets, fuel)
Hibachi (charcoal)
Food
Bicycles (3 mini bikes)
Portable Sound System
all loaded into Dead Letter Car. We went to the Dead Letter Truck, currently parked in Southeast.

We got in the truck, (7:21), and rushed off towards the pile. Alas! We didn't check the oil! it was EMPTY. We drove across the Ross Island Bridge. We got just above downtown. The truck died at a red light.

We waited for it to cool, and called some Zoo Bombers to come and bring us oil. We filled up the engine. It started again! Hurrah!

We drove to the pile. We conferenced. We cleaned the truck up nice. We loaded everyone in and got all the bikes on the roof. We started the truck!

Hmm... something sounds sort of 'clangy' in the headers... oh wait! the engine just went

CATHUNK.

No more engine. Bye Bye, Engine.

We rolled backwards into a parking spot. AAA said, "sorry, you're too big". Our mechanics are calling friends to see if someone with a big flatbed can come get it, or a tow truck. I'm on the roof (good wifi down here!), and Tornado Boy is (theoretically) sleeping inside. Hopefully we'll get it way down to Jim's house in Clackamas, and they'll swap out the engine before late july.

Woot! New Engine! Woot! Breaking down with all the Zoo Bomers on board!

;-b

ps. - might not be ready for SOAK, though - I can be a civilian again! yay! Borg 3! We're here to watch!

Good meeting tonight - we worked out a basic 'stuff' list, and began checking off people according to what they had together. If you are camping with us, or are Samba do Sol from Portland, please post whether or not you have the following:

Misc:
puppet
Camp:
Sleeping Bag
Tent
Bins
Water Containers
Rebar
Radios
Flashlight
Lanterns
Headlight
rope
carrabiners
duct-tape
garbage bags
ziploc bags
tarps
Food
Cooler
camping stove
cooking gear
chopsticks
dishes
You
Bike
helmet, pads, bikegear
Clothes
First Aid Kit
Toiletries
Sunscreen
goggles
glasses
contacts
spraybottle
washcloth
water bottles
puppet

Give us the exact list of what you have - as you get new gear, let us know to cross that off for you. We'll be keeping a database which will be periodically uploaded online. Lapis will be tracking gear and calling people periodically to try to help them find gear.

If the answer is 'no', are you planning on purchasing these items? Are you borrowing them? When, and from whom?

Also, we're serious about the puppet. No Puppet, No Ride.
Attribution of Negative Intent to Dead Letter: The Broken Glasses Topic

<b>Problem: </b>

Someone thinks that Dead Letter has an ‘obligation’ to _pay_ for a pair of glasses that were broken at the M4 show last night, and that we are potentially attempting to avoid our (my) ‘duty’.

<b>Identify:</b>

Last night, at the M4 show, my arm knocked someone’s glasses off.

Within a very few seconds, he was shouting about ‘restitution’, and how he was ‘owed’ a new pair of glasses. It was very transactional, and seemed clearly more about him trying to get his ‘due’ and desiring conflict than collective problem solving. It was a crowded dance floor, at the height of the M4 show, after all.

His mapping outwards of anger got a response from one of the punkers whose dancing had shoved into me, and I stumbled into this gentleman.

So they are getting into it, and they are each ‘testing’ each other for negative intent, and being confirmed that they are each standing in the presence of ‘the enemy’. Punker gives him all the money he has - $1.50, which is more of a pyrric gesture than any real attempt at mitigation.

I defuse that situation by emphasizing that it was _my_ arm that knocked his glasses off, and so in a few minutes he’s talking to me, telling me what I _have_ to do. And you know me – I’m perfectly willing to help him with infrastructure (who better than me understands the loss of a critical piece of infrastructure?), and we’re also going to need to address this ridiculous, “someone owes me a new pair of glasses” framing before we get any work done.

A couple of people are on one side, saying, “you lost your pair of glasses on a crowded dance floor, so eat a bowl of dick!” and I’m saying, “Look, there’s another way to handle the system.”

And on the other hand is someone saying, “Take his [mine] glasses and break them!” – which is one of the most stunning examples of unethical framings I’ve seen in PDX! At an M4 show, no less!

I identify myself clearly, Dead Letter Ben, and he wants me to go give him some sort of insurance information – which is clearly not going to happen. If he thinks he can stand on his ‘rights’, we can go to Judge Judy and she’ll tell him to Eat a Bowl of Dick, too. I explain to him how to find me easiest – here through http://deadletter.tribe.net, through various M4 people that he knows, such as Amy Hatfield, Sprockettes, Argon – which is finally enough for him to believe that I’m not ‘just’ shining him on, that really is the best way to get me, fast.

Additionally, the loss of a critical piece of infrastructure is often more frustrating for the time and energy expenditure, as well as how the money _would_ have gone to other projects. So if Argon can find out what he _would_ have spent the money on – what big infrastructure needs he was having, perhaps we can provide that item(s) easier, freeing up resources in his life to address the pair of glasses, literally.

Summary:

So, I took an attribute of negative intent last night from someone who may or may not have blowback in the March 4th system, (though the framing of how he was attempting to leverage resources will most likely rebound back onto him from the general group). I did take it upon myself to be ‘the guy he was angry at’ rather than the punker (cause I think he could have ended up with a broken noise, the way he was going), and plus, I’ve been working on that particular punker on the whole ‘mapping back anger with friendliness, hate with love’ a couple of times, and I think it will be valuable for him in the long run to see me take the glasses problem on as mine, even if it makes ‘Dead Letter’ look bad in the M4 system till it is resolved.

<b>Strategy:</b>

So now I’ll contact Argon, tell him to try to get me the prescription and potentially frame, (and maybe the still intact lens I was able to find), and we’ll see if we can’t use the infrastructure network to turn around a pair of glasses – Lyon’s Club? With the Lyon’s Club, it may be possible to end up with several pairs of glasses, so that he won’t have to worry about a single lost pair of glasses, anymore. If I translate our interaction through Argon, we can potentially get the glasses solved without getting stuck in the feedback loop of how I’m ‘obligated’ to do anything – I’m already keenly aware that I’ve volunteered my own time and energy to be ‘the guy who solves the problem’, a role I’ve taken unto myself, and not one that could ever be imposed by someone else.

<b>Solve: </b>

I will now email this to Argon, and ask him to try to get a) his prescription and potentially where he last bought frames, b) perhaps something else very expensive that he _would_ have been spending money on, that perhaps we know how to find very easily.

<b>Verify:</b>

We’ll define success in the system as ‘he realizes that I’m helping him out of a desire to demonstrate a loving response to a conflict-based response’, without a sense of obligation, and that he appreciates the time and energy I will/might invest in this situation. This might be reached by providing multiple pairs as a result, especially if the amount of time and energy he has to spend is kept to a minimum.

We’ll define ‘lack of success’ as a fairly serious blowback through M4 that a) I apparently had some kind of obligation that I failed to complete’ – given the number of projects we’re doing with and around them and their people, I doubt that – the number of items of service that we’ve done recently will be brought to tally.

Wish me luck!

Kid Friendly: Dead Letter, Zoo Bomb! Bike Fixits (Summer 2006)

This topic is for the posting, organizing, implementing and evaluating of Kids Bike Fixits this summer.

Overview: The Lucky Labrador sponsored our last 'Beer 4 Work' party with a FREE keg, because we were doing fixing for kids in the neighborhood. Therefore, let's go legit! We're proposing four dates in the summer where we would descend on a different PDX park.

We would roll the DLT, get a dj for the soundsystem, set up the bike stands, and probably end up drinking beer and fixing our own bikes until neighbor kids show up.

The last one is intended to also be a major mini-bike fix it for NEVADA BOMB, the Burning Man Bomb.

I expect to have Ari at these events, and hope to make it a kid-friendly event.

Proposed Dates:

June 10th
July 8th,
July 22nd,
August 19th

hey dead letter truck,

I met you guys en route to the burn last year in portland and now well i have a prposal for you guys.

I am setting up a post office at the euro regional event in spain, i have my candy raver mailman outfit ready, i have a camel to borrow to deliver the mail now all i needs is mail to deliver. i have mailed about 150 people around the world to send mail, i have contacted many of our participants best fgriends from home and the real world to mail me postcards that i can deliver em on site. but i was wondering is there any mail the dead letter truck would like distributed to happy high hippies on a cliff edge in spain.

Our event is still quite small and back to basics, so we are thinking we will have 100 participants butmy aim is to have every single participant get some mail regardless of wether or not anyone has sent them any.

so if you guys think that you have any contributionss you would like to make to this project then drop me a line.

failing that i look forward to seeing the fhe dead letter truck whilst playa side this year en route to india.

)'( '06 - Signal Vs. Noise - Dead Letter on Playa

Here's the overview topic for the trip to BM this year. Certain aspects will probably spin off into their own topics.

Overview:

***Leave PDX Wed, 8/23 or Thur 8/24
***Rendezvous in Alturas
***Friday, 8/25 - Nevada Bomb! (see below)
***Camp on playa, have lots of fun, drive away Sunday Night after the temple burn.
***Return to PDX approximately 10pm, Tuesday night (late estimate).

We will roll to the last town in California, Alturas, and rendezvous with any other mini-riders who hear about us through a post in Jack Rabbit Speaks. On Friday, perhaps towards mid-afternoon, we'll bomb Cedar Pass down into Cedarville, NV. Approximately one mile of elevation descent, 8 miles long. The map of the Bomb can be seen:

http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=10&n=4603625.99983889&e=730992.000203519&datum=nad83

We'll be taking people's bicycles, structures, etc, to pay for gas and expenses. Expect a transport cost of $200 for people who want to ride with. This gets transportations for:

1) You
2) Your bicycle
3) Your gear
4) Your water
5) Your art

We're always built to spill, so there's generally new people as well as the old standbys.
Pirate Mail is what we call it when we handle it ourselves.

First Theorem of Pirate Mail:

Pirate Mail is all objects, media or information transported from you _towards_ your target, carried above the threshold of 'you', below the threshold of 'official mail/delivery personnel'.

***Notice that this definition reads, "towards" - who cares if it gets there? It is pirate mail _while_ it travels.***

Second Theorem of Pirate Mail:

If the First Theorem precludes you as carrier, then

sender->carrier->target

is one end of the spectrum, and

sender->stranger->stranger->...->acquaintance of target->friend of target->target

is the other end of the spectrum.

Set one end at zero (total control, zero freedom), the other at one (no control, total freedom) and we get a ratio that helps us to speak metaphorically about the travel of packages (Freedom of Travel Ratio or FOTR)

Third Theorem of Pirate Mail

The Goal of Pirate Mail is to be able to place mail into the system at higher and higher FOTRs, while still maintaining parity of signal (information arrives).

Fourth Theorem of Pirate Mail

To be able to place packages into the system with a very high FOTR, some of the following factors may be useful.

1) Doing it against a background in which Pirate Mail has been done before, witnessed before, heard of before, read about (Crying of Lot 49) or imagined.

2) The target has a well-known information sphere which helps to map relative closeness to the packages current location.

i.e. Sending to 'Portland Zoo Bomb' - first the package is 'close' if it even gets to Portland. Then, if it is in the hands of someone who has heard of Zoo Bomb. Then, if a person has gone Zoo Bombing...

The public reputation of Zoo Bomb helps to tell the package how much farther 'one step' would be. Each participant need only do one small step to helped Dead Letter.

3) Good Meta makes Good Mail

The more the package addressing can point to pathways for its own travel, the faster it will map into the local community. So plucking a well-known person, who knows of Dead Letter, and who also more or less knows the communities, is worth MUCH more than getting it to the right neighborhood, in the hands of someone who doesn't know any of those people.

ie, Michael Holden or Dj Diem for Seattle Burners, vs. 'North End of Broadway'.

(Geographic shifts are only important in stage one.)

Theorem Five of Pirate Mail

Someone, somewhere, has to make the mail.
Someone, somewhere, has to pass the mail.
Someone, somewhere, reads the mail.
Someone, somewhere, edits the mail.
Someone, somewhere, receives the mail.

Not all in that order, and hopefully not all the same person!
Let it begin....

Who's got the baddest crew?
This is going to be a full-on, ninja squad vs. zombie cult vs. (whoever you are here...) non-harmful, tribal warfare based on the proceedures of the "unread/unwritten guide to intercommunal protocol and behavior."

Games follow these general guidelines:
Tribes make a flag with their own icon/symbol/insignia on both faces.
Flags are to be hung in a reachable public space frequented or facilitated by members of the tribe.
Every active member needs to carry 1 red sharpie and wear their tribal insignia.
Tagging an opponent with a red sharpie (anywhere on the opponent's skin or clothing) marks them as inactive for one full day.
Game ends when a tribe collects all flags from opposing tribes.
One flag can be taken at a time by each member.
If a tribes flag is taken, the only flag that tribe can seek is their own.
If a flag is taken, all tribes must be notified.
To win the game, a tribe must collect all flags within a week of obtaining their first flag

For a full explanation of the rules and policies join the Ninja Playground tribe.
All news for the game will be funnelled through the Ninja Playground .

Problems to be Solved!

As predicted, we are encountering a couple of organizational difficulties.

1) As the database/list of interesting people begins to grow, it becomes a little unusable to look at a single topic, one big list. How to arrange this better?

- options:

a) Go all the way to a spiffy databasing website to handle some of this work for us?
b) Erase the topics we have and create new topics for listing people, according to major interest - music, film, writing, fire

2) The number of empty envelopes/people to write to grows at a different quantum than the number of letters (for obvious reasons - 'just' addressing an envelope is easier

- options

a) Create Potsal boards with envelopes at various cafes - then collect 90% of the mail (leaving some always) in order to have mail to give away

3) Envelopes keep running out

- options

a) 60$ does a print job of 1000

DRAWBACKS: It will be much, much less inviting if it is a sterile print job. Maybe we could arrange for the envelopes to be intentionally screwed up? A variety of envelopes, some 'perfect' prints, some mismatched black and silver?
